About Labor Day, Sobriety Checkpoints and Holiday Safety

Wikipedia’s Labor Day article tells us that Labor Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September. The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the “working man”. It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many. Labor Day became a national holiday by Act of Congress in 1894. Another interesting article, The Origin of Labor Day by Ryan M. Hoback of the Motivated Entrepeneur, goes into greater detail about the holiday.   Los Angeles Sobriety Checkpoints: LAPD will be in full force this Labor… Read More

Motorcycle Safety: Group Riding Video

Another informative video on Group Riding from the The Motorcycle Safety Foundation which is a national, not-for-profit organization that promotes the safety of motorcyclists with programs in rider education and training, operator licensing and public information. Through these programs, and by advocating a more friendly riding environment, the MSF has aimed to make motorcycling safer and more enjoyable since 1973. For motorcyclists, the MSF has five key messages: 1) Get trained and licensed 2) Wear protective gear — all the gear, all the time — including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by the DOT 3) Ride unimpaired by alcohol or… Read More

Spinal Cord Injury More Frequent in Children with Seat Belt Injuries

Medical News Today reports that Spinal Injuries Are More Frequent in Children With Seat Belt Injuries. If the link to the article is inactive, you can click here to access the Adobe Acrobat version of the article. The article states, in part, that “Ill-fitting seat belts raise the risk of serious injury to children involved in car accidents. And seat belt injuries should alert physicians to look for signs of more serious consequences, particularly spinal cord injury, which is not always immediately apparent. “Unless physicians are diligent, spinal-cord injuries are hard to diagnose in children. In the event of a car accident, seat belt… Read More

Texas Judges Weigh in on Tort Reform: They Don’t Believe In It Either

The Texas law firm of Perlmutter & Schuelke has posted an excellent article to their BLOG entitled Tort Reform: Straight From the Horse’s (or the Judge’s) which summarizes a Baylor University study wherein they surveyed Texas Civil Judges regarding their opinions on Tort Reform (or, as I like to call it, Tort Deform). Essentially, the report found that “the results were findings that substantially more judges thought juries had awarded too low of damages than judges that thought juries had awarded too much. And well over 80% of the judges did not think there needed to be additional “reform” to address frivolous lawsuits.” The… Read More
