10 Hot Hands Free Devices to Comply With New Hands Free Cell Phone Laws

From practical to stylish, high tech companies worldwide are developing and marketing new hands-free devices to help you comply with the new hands-free cell phone laws in various states in the union.  Being an attorney who represents injured people, I’m thrilled to see the proliferation of these devices.  I can’t tell you how many clients will come to me after a devastating car accident and say “She/he was on the cell phone and didn’t see me.”  It reminds me of a case that I had several years ago where my client was rear-ended by a guy who was watching a… Read More

Smart Car: How Safe Is It? Miles Per Gallon?

Have you been noticing the proliferation of the Daimler AG’s Smart Car recently? Sure, it gets great mileage, looks pretty cute and zips right along. But its recent emergence on the scene got me to wondering just how safe this little tiny car would be in a big crash. According to greencar.com, “The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently crash tested the 2008 smart for two and found it performed so well it earned the Institute’s best ratings for front and side crash protection. Plus, its rear crash worthiness was rated as “acceptable,” the Institute’s second-highest rating.” Read the complete IIHS report… Read More

Former NY Judge Jeanine Pirro, Doctored Police Report, $200K Settlement

My favorite blogging New York Personal Injury Attorney, Eric Turkewitz, relates a great story of corruption involving a former judge/district attorney and her formerly disbarred high-powered real estate attorney husband. Here’s what Turkewitz tells us: Al Pirro Jr. last week quietly settled a lawsuit for $200,000 that involved Jeanine Pirro and her failed political campaign for Attorney General. Jeanine — also a former judge, District Attorney, failed Senate candidate against Hillary Clinton and now a talk show host — was in the backseat of her husband’s SUV on October 18, 2006 when it sideswiped a motorcyclist as they approached a light. The collision knocked him down, broke his ankle and sent him skidding… Read More

Clergy Sexual Abuse: New Book Confirms the Need For Lawsuits

(Albany) has published Holding Bishops Accountable: How Lawsuits Helped the Catholic Church Confront Clergy Sexual Abuse (Harvard University Press 2008), available here. The abstract (from SSRN) reads: The sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy is arguably the most acute crisis Catholicism has faced since the Reformation. The prevalence of clergy sexual abuse and its shocking cover-up by church officials have obscured the largely untold story of the tort system’s remarkable success in bringing the scandal to light, focusing attention on the need for institutional reform, and spurring church leaders and public officials into action. Stories of the tort system as an engine… Read More
