Horsepower comes cheap these days, with even minivans having 250 horses. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cites speeding as the factor in 1/3 of all crash-related fatalities. With federal officials are urging states to increase speed enforcement, causing lawmakers in California to have added surcharges of as much as $30 on top of fines for speeding. The Mafia Godfather, The Bookkeeper and the Lawyer

Published On: March 19, 2008

Sometimes we, as lawyers, take ourselves a little too seriously. So, in an attempt to change that mind set, here’s a joke that someone forwarded to me this morning. It doesn’t make us look too good but it certainly made me smile! Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has cheated him out of ten million bucks. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not hear anything that he might have to testify about in court. When the Godfather goes to confront the… Read More

What a great party holiday but, with such great fun, comes great risk to life and limb and since my law practice revolves around injury to life and limb, I feel it is my duty to beseech you to be careful this St. Patty’s Day. We’ve got a double whammy here because the risks are intensified by the fact that this holiday, which oftentimes revolves around drinking to excess, also falls on a Saturday — and we all know what happens on Saturday nights! The following posting is copied from the article Intellectual Property Bullies — This Time It Is the Grinch which was recently posted in the always brilliant Consumer Law & Policy Blog. I found it quite interesting and provocative and wanted to share it with you. Dr. Seuss –- or, at least, the lawyers for his estate — are at it again. The victim this time is Teamsters for a Democratic Union, which put articles on its web site and in its newspaper that portrayed Teamster President James Hoffa as the Grinch. TDU used an illustration of the Grinch, and used the distinctive font used in the… Read More

Last September I posted a blog piece which focused heavily on texting while driving. The situation continues to escalate. Living and driving in Los Angeles really brings to light the flagrant disregard that so many drivers have for their fellow motorists, not to mention pedestrians and bicyclists, whom they do not see when their focus is on texting or dialing on their cell phone. I truly believe that talking on the phone is not so much a distraction as the focus that it requires to text and/or dial while driving.
